    What criteria do I need to check before buying a steel spill tray?

    What sort of media should be stored?

    Steel spill trays are suitable for non-corrosive substances such as oils or flammable liquids.

    In the case of flammable liquids, steel spill trays are generally always required (as they are made of non-combustible material; trays made of PE or other materials are not suitable or permitted for this purpose!)

    Many media can also be used on both steel collection trays and on PE drip trays are stored; oils are a good example of this. It can also be helpful to check the material of the original container in which the hazardous substance was supplied by the manufacturer; this is a simple but very reliable method. Ideally, you should consult the substance’s safety data sheet, where you will find all the information on correct storage.

    If corrosive hazardous substances such as acids or alkalis are stored, a stainless steel sump is required, one with A tub lined with PE or made of PE to use.

    PLEASE NOTE: When storing flammable liquids, in addition to choosing the right tank, the location must also be considered. Indoors, F90 cabinets or F90 containers are usually required, whilst outdoors certain distances from surrounding buildings must be maintained. Further information on this is also provided by TRGS 510 (Technical Regulations for Hazardous Substances), which sets out rules for the storage of hazardous substances in portable containers.

    What is the required capacity of the steel spill tray?

    The collection capacity must be at least 10 % of the total quantity stored above the sump amount to – but in any event at least the Volume of the largest single container. The higher of the two values is the one that applies. In water protection areas, the 100% sump must be capable of accommodating the volume stored above it.

    Can I store different hazardous substances together in a single sump?

    Only if no hazardous reactions are to be expected and the rules on the storage of incompatible substances set out in TRGS 510 are observed. To this end, carry out a risk assessment and check the storage classes of the substances in question. The storage compatibility table in accordance with TRGS 510, as well as consulting the safety data sheets for the substances, is often helpful.

    Painted or galvanised steel tray?

    Hot-dip galvanised trays offer long-lasting protection against corrosion and are suitable for harsh environmental conditions, whilst painted trays are a cost-effective solution for sheltered and dry environments.

    Can spill trays also be used outdoors?

    Spill trays are generally intended for indoor use. If they are used outdoors, a suitable canopy must be in place to prevent rainwater from entering the trays. Alternatively, fully enclosed solutions such as hazardous materials storage units or hazardous materials containers are recommended, so that the available containment capacity is not reduced by rainwater.

    Are there also steel spill trays with a PE lining?

    Lacont can generally be used – for example, for the storage of acids or alkalis – Steel spill trays with PE Lining. This is mainly used when the spill trays have to bear heavy loads or when specific tray dimensions are required which cannot be achieved or are not available with standard PE trays.

    Please note that the PE linings are fitted at the factory and cannot be fitted at a later date.

    What should you do if flammable acids or alkalis are being stored?

    When flammable acids or alkalis are stored, the PE lining of the steel sump must be made of conductive PE; these sumps combine the high resistance of plastic to corrosive substances such as acids or alkalis with the conductive properties that are otherwise often only offered by metal sumps.

    What do ‘StawaR’ and the ‘Ü’ symbol mean?

    The StawaR (Steel Sump Guidelines) sets out the technical requirements for steel spill containment sumps with a capacity of up to 1,000 litres. Trays manufactured in accordance with StawaR bear the Ü mark (mark of conformity). This certifies to you, as the operator, that the product has been tested for quality and leak-tightness and ensures legal compliance with the requirements of the authorities and insurance companies.

    How often should spill trays be inspected?

    Periodic inspections are mandatory in accordance with the WHG, AwSV, TRGS and the operating instructions for the sumps. A distinction can be made as follows:

    Regular checks during operation. Should any damage occur or be detected whilst using or working with the trays, these trays must be taken out of service immediately. When using the trays on the premises, care must always be taken to ensure that they are kept free of any spilled substances, water or dirt.

    Weekly inspection / visual check by trained site staff for cracks, corrosion, deposits and leaked fluids

    Detailed inspection: For steel spill trays, a two-year interval is often required for in-depth inspections. These must be carried out by external, independent and qualified testing bodies. The test results must be recorded in writing and retained for inspection by the authorities

    Following any repair work (e.g. to welded joints), a leak test must be carried out by the manufacturer or a specialist contractor.
