How the VDS-certified LiBa®Sol aerosol fire-extinguishing system works:

Generally speaking, an aerosol is defined as a mixture of gas and solid and/or liquid suspended particles. When the solid contained in the LiBa®Sol generators is activated or combusted, an aerosol consisting of solid and gaseous particles is produced. These spread throughout the entire cabinet within milliseconds, displacing oxygen, diluting flammable gases and thereby initiating the extinguishing process! The extinguishing process works by interfering with the fire triangle. This always consists of the fuel itself, oxygen and ignition energy (heat). The aerosol therefore interferes with the chemical chain reaction of the fire process – amongst other things by displacing oxygen – and interrupts it. The VDS-certified LiBa®Sol extinguishing agent is 100% environmentally friendly, produces no environmentally hazardous by-products and is completely climate-friendly

Design of the spill tray:

  • Floor drip tray made from 3 mm galvanised sheet steel
  • Welded to be liquid-tight in accordance with AwSV – Ü mark according to StawaR
  • Capacity: 30 litres

LaCont Battery-Powered Concrete Cabinet | Fire safety „Made in Germany“

When it comes to the safe storage and charging of lithium-ion batteries, the LaCont Umwelttechnik GmbH for maximum security. Our high-quality BBS battery-concrete cabinets bear the seal of quality „Made in Germany“ with a reliable 90-minute fire resistance. This protects your staff, prevents the fire from spreading to the building and gives the emergency services valuable time to respond. As our battery-concrete cabinets are developed and manufactured in Germany, they guarantee the highest manufacturing quality, safety in line with standards and maximum reliability in day-to-day industrial use.

1. What structural requirements apply to the installation of the Battery-concrete cupboards?

Due to its robust reinforced concrete construction (F90), the BBS battery concrete cabinet has a net weight of approximately 2,850 kg. It must therefore be demonstrated that the ground at the installation site can bear a load of at least 26 kN/m². It is not necessary to anchor the cabinet to the floor, as its considerable weight ensures it stands firmly on its own.

2. Can the Battery and concrete cabinet Can it also be used for actively charging lithium-ion batteries?

Yes, the BBS battery-concrete cabinet is suitable for both passive storage and active charging of lithium-ion batteries. On request, each storage level can be fitted with a 5-socket power strip (including surge protection, a 16 A circuit breaker and an illuminated safety switch) to enable batteries to be charged in an organised and safe manner.

3. What safety objectives does the BBS battery-concrete cabinet fulfil in an emergency?

The BBS battery-concrete cabinet provides reliable protection for your business against the dangers of a battery fire or thermal runaway. In the real-world test (based on ADR guidelines), it was demonstrated that the external temperature of the cabinet does not exceed 100 °C at any time. Furthermore, there is no escape of flames or splinters, and harmful gases are reliably filtered out by the integrated gas management system.

BBS Battery-Concrete Cabinet: Fire protection for battery storage

Lithium-ion batteries have become an integral part of our everyday lives. Lithium-ion rechargeable batteries are being used in an ever-increasing number of products and devices, not only in the private sector but also, in particular, in trades and industrial settings, such as in a wide range of power tools or mobile machinery. However, these high-performance batteries pose significant risks if handled or stored incorrectly. In accordance with the ADR (Regulations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods), they are classified as Class 9 dangerous goods and are therefore regarded as particularly hazardous. Safe storage with regard to fire, smoke and explosion, as well as a fire-resistant partition separating them from other areas, is therefore essential.

A technical fault, mechanical damage or overloading can lead to an uncontrolled fire that is difficult to extinguish. There is still no clear legislation governing the storage of lithium-ion batteries (rechargeable batteries); nevertheless, they must be treated as hazardous substances. Given this high potential for danger, the utmost care must be taken to ensure safety when storing and charging lithium-ion batteries.

Protection objectives of the BBS battery-concrete cabinet

The BBS battery-concrete cabinet from LaCont is manufactured from Class F90 fire-resistant precast reinforced concrete elements (concrete C 35/45 in accordance with EN 206-1). During the field test of the storage cabinet, the test was conducted in accordance with ADR guidelines. It was found that the BBS fully met its protection objective:

  • The temperature on the outer surfaces of the storage cabinet did not exceed T = 100°C at any time
  • No flames were observed and no solid particles were detected escaping from the storage cabinet
  • Analysis of the HF measurement data has shown that at no point were critical hydrogen fluoride concentrations detected outside the test specimen (pressure relief with integrated gas management).

Solid concrete structure and certified safety

The BBS is fitted with a T90-1 fire door with an additional wedge-lever lock, which keeps the door securely closed even when internal pressure is high. The cabinet model is protected by a utility model (DBGM20 2023101699) and has successfully undergone an explosion test at the BAM in Berlin.

With this robust concrete safety system, the BBS cabinet provides reliable fire protection for commercial use and effectively safeguards your business and your staff in their day-to-day work.

Causes and consequences of thermal runaway in lithium-ion batteries

The everyday use of lithium-ion batteries carries underestimated risks which, without professional safety measures, can quickly lead to devastating damage. Various factors can trigger an uncontrollable chain reaction (Thermal runaway) trigger. Common causes include mechanical damage or external damage caused by drops and impacts, as well as gradual deep discharge and severe overheating during charging. Similarly, the use of incorrect chargers, dangerous overcharging or extremely high ambient temperatures can cause the sensitive cell chemistry to heat up rapidly.

If a critical threshold is exceeded, thermal runaway sets in and the energy stored in the battery is discharged uncontrollably. The consequences in an emergency are dramatic. Initially, toxic and highly flammable fumes develop, which quickly turn into an open fire. This causes the individual battery cells to burst and, in the worst-case scenario, leads to a violent explosion involving extreme pressure build-up and dangerous flying debris.

The Battery concrete cabinet BBS was specifically designed to withstand precisely this extreme hazard scenario. Thanks to the solid reinforced concrete construction, the fire-resistant T90-1 fire door with a wedge-lever lock and the integrated gas management system, the risk of a Thermal Runaway completely contained within the cupboard, so that neither flames nor splinters nor hazardous gases can escape into the room.
