Gas cylinder storage system concrete
The storage of gas cylinders (pressure vessels) is regulated by TRGS 510. This means that gas cylinders must be placed securely on a level surface and must be secured to prevent them from falling over, e.g. by storing them on pallets or securing them with a safety chain.

What you need to bear in mind when storing pressurised gas cylinders!
Pressurised gas cylinders are among the goods in storage that are subject to strict regulations due to their high potential for danger. The most important regulations are set out in the TRGS 510 regulated. Below, we have included key extracts from the TRGS 510 compiled.
4.2 Storage locations and areas:
(4) Hazardous substances must not, as a general rule, be stored in places where this could endanger employees or other persons.

- Such places are, in particular, traffic routes. Traffic routes include, amongst other things, stairwells,
Corridors, escape and evacuation routes, passageways, driveways and narrow courtyards. - Places unsuitable for storage include, amongst others, break rooms, on-call rooms, toilet facilities, first-aid rooms and day accommodation.
- Hazardous substances may only be stored in workrooms if such storage is compatible with the protection of employees and takes place in specialised facilities that comply with the state of the art.
- Such places are, in particular, traffic routes. Traffic routes include, amongst other things, stairwells,
10.1 Scope:
(1) These regulations must be observed when storing gases labelled H220, H221, H270, H280 or H281 in accordance with the CLP Regulation and stored in quantities exceeding 2.5 litres.
10.2 Organisational measures:
(1) Pressurised gas cylinders must be secured to prevent them from toppling over or falling. The valves must be protected by a suitable protective device.
(2) Gases must not be transferred within the warehouse, nor must any maintenance work be carried out on pressurised gas containers.
(3) Acutely toxic gases must be kept under lock and key or stored in such a way that only competent and trustworthy persons have access to them.
(4) Gases labelled H330 may only be stored in rooms if these are fitted with a gas detection system that triggers an audible and visual alarm should the permissible workplace exposure limits be exceeded.
10.3 Structural requirements and fire safety:
(1) When stored in storage rooms
-
- storage rooms must be separated from adjoining rooms by at least fire-retardant construction elements (F 30),
- Components must be fire-resistant if there is a risk of fire or explosion in adjacent rooms which are not used for the storage of gases,
- The external walls of storage rooms must be at least fire-retardant. If the safety distance to neighbouring installations and facilities which may pose a hazard is at least 5 metres, the external wall may be made of non-combustible material.
(2) Outdoor storage areas must maintain a safety distance of at least 5 metres from neighbouring installations and facilities that may pose a hazard.
(3) Pressurised gas cylinders may only be stored in workrooms in suitable safety cabinets with a fire resistance rating of at least 30 minutes. Acutely toxic gases must only be stored in mechanically ventilated safety cabinets with an air change rate of 120 times per hour. Oxidising or flammable gases may only be stored in mechanically ventilated safety cabinets with an air change rate of ten times per hour.
(4) A maximum of 50 filled pressurised gas cylinders may be stored in rooms below ground level, provided that
- where mechanical ventilation ensures two air changes per hour,
- in the case of natural ventilation, the ventilation openings have a total cross-sectional area of at least 10% of the floor area of this room, ensure adequate ventilation, and the floor is no more than 1.5 m below ground level; or
- they are stored in safety cabinets that comply with the requirements of DIN EN 14470-2.
(5) Rooms in which pressurised gas cylinders are stored must be adequately ventilated.
Natural ventilation is sufficient if ventilation openings leading directly to the outside are fitted with
with a total cross-sectional area of at least 1/100 of the floor area of the storage room.
10.4 Special protective measures:
(1) In the case of acutely toxic or flammable gases, safety zones must be established around pressurised gas containers. These zones must be given special consideration in the risk assessment; for example, explosion protection measures may be necessary.
